Bam! Pow! Wow! Its Comics!

In class we looked into comics (because our class is cool since its Illustrators and Graphics) and we looked into types such as 'Graphic Novels' and 'Penny Dreadfuls'

Of course me being me, I am most aquainted with the all powerful Manga, which is typically described as a Japanese comic but if you ask me I would say Japanese graphic novel is closer (though the definition states its both) I just say that because the amount of pages in a manga is basically a books worth, and I don't tend to associate comic books with lots of pages. _Also me being me is very rambly so excuse this mess_

Graphic novels are as they sound, novels that have been turned into picyure form, usually close to a comic book style of drawing if you asked me. I once had a graphic Novel of twighlight which was fairly interesting to see, though it was basically like seeing the movie in a comic format. I prefer Grim Fairy Tales, which I consider more on the Graphic Novel side then Comics though I suppose it could fall under either.

If you know the lingo you might be able to piece together what Indie Comics might be.. Did you guess, or did you look it up? ..Cheater.

Yes, Indie comics are esentially comics that dont tend to be funded by big name brands and are in fact independantly published, also usually less well known. A noteable Indie comic is 'Preacher' which actually got adapted to a TV show. Heres a list for those who might be interested :

I mean that first option isn't a bad idea.. But yes its a type of comic which if im right is called that mostly due to the quality of paper? Lets check that.

PD- A cheap sensational comic or storybook, the term typically referred to a story published in weekly parts, each costing one penny ( in the nineteenth century).

Splash pages, nothing to do with water sadly, takes up the whole page of a comic to help introduce or give special attention to battles or particular events. Which is usually used in action comics such as Teen Titans.

Underground Comics (or Comix)- are small press or self-published comic books that are often socially relevant or satirical in nature. They differ from mainstream comics in depicting content forbidden to mainstream publications by the Comics Code Authority, including explicit drug use, sexuality, and violence, some of which im sure people would love more of in comics.

Bande Dessinee seems to translate to comic strips, so I can assume its french comic strips, however don't quote me on that as I can't find a decent definition.

Graphic memoirs & Journalism is much what youd expect, ones memoirs which are turned into a graphic form and ones journalism whic combines graphics and words.

Genres are the catagorey which your comic (in this case) would fall under, such as Action/Superhero would be the lable for something like Batman, and is one of the more popular Genres. Another is comedy and even horror. Just categories which describe the content best.

I was surprised to find some comics I assumed were American actually turned out to be somewhere different, or even English. Such as Moomins which I assumed was English was actually done by a Finnish illustrator. TinTin I originally thought was American is actually Belgium.
