Every Picture Has a Story

In our first lesson for creative research, it became very clear that it could be a class where some heated debates may transpire. I remember feeling very aggitated after the lesson was finished, of course our first task had something to do with a political cartoon piece. The piece in question was talking about a lack of compassion Trump had for the Refugee man and his young child who washed up on shore. This image continued to play a role in the lesson as other instances of this was used as 'powerful' imagery. I personally began to get annoyed over this, finding it actually pretty disrespectful to the dead that people were using them in contexts that didn't even involve them; such a case being an 'accidental' imaged Gucci used in a magazine for promo which hinted at a drown woman all dressed up on a shore, which just so happened to be in the same magazine as the image taken of the same case. For brands and those looking for exposure, all exposure is good exposure.

Though people call an image 'powerful' or 'striking' I personally feel that unless your goal is to make a statment on the sorrow of the event (such as this drowning) that you have no right to push your own agenda using that pain for a 'emotive' piece which has nothing to do with the actual event, even going as far as political points.

Every image does tell a story and usually that story is THEIR story, just as an artist doesnt appreciate their work stolen, you shouldnt steal anothers story for your point. Though I can be called hypocritical as I feel vent art and refferences can be used when creating certain things. Just dont use someones story to get your message across. Make your own damn story.

Sometimes, storys aren't as deep as they are made out to be, sometimes blue is blue and not 'blue to represnt the deep depression he felt'. You will always interpret something to what you understand and see, but not every story is meaningful. Some stories are just happy because they are. Don't always go searching for a deeper meaning. Just some thoughts from your favourite sketchy witch.

If you answered the smiling tear face, you would be wrong. I was just playing with fun expressions. The plus sized character however was designed and portrayed the way she is because I had finally started to appreciate my own body type more and seen the confidence and beauty that could be had even with an uncoventional standard of body. This character is confident and sexy and most importantly completely at home in her own skin, which came from my own acceptance that I may not be the normal standard for beauty BUT I am beautiful.

Every Picture DOES tell a story. It just depends on who tells it.
